THE MIPDOC INTERNATIONAL PITCH 2018 FINALISTS

ALZHEIMER'S: TRACKING THE ASSASSIN

Presented by:

Moira Mann, Producer, Axolotl Films, UK

Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS are three related diseases. After decades of research, the drug companies have not found a treatment. But when you look at a map – it’s obvious – there are clusters. The first cluster was noticed sixty years ago. Since then another seventeen clusters have been recorded, and scientists have been searching for the toxin that might be triggering these diseases. It seems that the likely culprit is a neurotoxin produced by blue-green algae. This 90-minute documentary will reveal an extraordinary story of discovery, and a further 10 shortform interactive videos will offer practical advice and avoidance tactics.

MAN VS TIME

Presented by:

Nicolas Boucher, CEO & Executive Producer, DBCOM MEDIA, Canada

Since just about forever, Man has been looking for ways to save time. We have spent most of our time inventing tools in the hope of creating more of it. A machine that washes our dishes, a raised highway that offers a quicker route without traffic lights, an elevator that brings you up a 100 floors in 10 seconds. Scientifically quirky, the series explores ideas and objects that have had a crucial impact on our relationship with time. Each episode focuses on one time saving invention and the life changing impacts of its discovery.

NEXT: BLOCKCHAIN

Presented by:

Bianca Chen, Producer, OX3 TV PRODUCTION

Some say blockchain is the second coming of the Internet, that it will change the way our world operates permanently. Others call it a scam. It enables the making of billionaires, but it has also put people in jail. What makes blockchain fascinating yet controversial? Does it solve our problems or cause more of them? World's first female-produced blockchain documentary, NEXT embarks on a global journey for answers--from giants like Microsoft to nascent startups, from world-class venture capitalists to nonprofits, from US, China, Japan to Brazil, wrapped in eight 45-minute episodes.

SOORA - BREAKING THE SILENCE

Presented by:

Luisa Schwamborn, Sales Executive, NEW DOCS, Germany

In Iran, Banafsheh, Sedigheh, Zahra and Jelveh – four fearless feminists – founded an NGO called “SOORA”. Its goal is to pass a law that makes domestic violence a crime. Our four protagonists take us along on their campaign tour through Iran, where we learn about its diverse traditions and about how male dominance is enforced by law. All of SOORA’s activities have to be carried out in secret because freedom of speech does not exist. The lives of the four women are always in danger. Will they succeed in breaking the silence and passing the law?
