Carolina Acosta-Alzuru (Ph.D., University of Georgia) is Professor in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia (USA). Her scholarship focuses on the links between media, culture and society, and bridges the disciplines of cultural studies and international media studies as she examines media texts, their production, distribution and reception. She is the author of three books and multiple academic articles about telenovelas, a genre she has been studying since 1999. Her research and teaching has earned her many awards, including the University of Georgia’s highest teaching honor—the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Professorship—and the 2015 Scripps Howard Foundation Journalism and Mass Communication Teacher of the Year for the United States. In the last year, her research has taken her to Istanbul as she examines the tensions between the domestic and global markets for Turkish dramas.
